R&R Component's Journey to Workplace Comfort and Profitability

R&R Components, an industry leader in wooden truss construction, faced a significant challenge during  summers just outside of York, PA. Traditional cooling methods were impractical for their 20,000 square foot facility, plagued by sawdust recirculation. This issue led to a loss of $140,000 in revenue, decreased productivity, work-related injuries, and frustration from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) due to employees working in shorts to combat the extreme heat.

In search of a temperature relief, R&R turned to HVAC Distributors, a manufacturing representative for Cambridge Air Solutions. Realizing that R&R needed an effective temperature relief system that didn't require the significant investment of DX mechnical cooling system, HVAC Distributors recommended a two-stage evaporative cooling system to provide the much-needed relief for RnR's employees.

The Effectiveness of the Two-Stage ESC-Series Evporative Cooling System

100% Outside Air: The evaporative cooling unit utilizes 100% outside air to supply tempered makeup air and cool the building effectively

Indirect Evaporative Cooling: Differing from traditional swamp coolers, the Cambridge ESC-Series incorporates indirect evaporative cooling. This feature enables temperature reduction even during high humidity when direct evaporative cooling is ineffective.

Operational Costs: The Cambridge ESC Series operates at a remarkably low energy consumption, utilizing only 30-40% of the energy required by mechanical cooling systems. This translates to a cost-effective cooling solution that doesn't strain the budget.

After implementing their new cooling system, the impact on R&R's operations and workforce was profound. By utilizing 100% outside air and incorporating indirect evaporative cooling, the Cambridge ESC-Series not only effectively addressed the intense heat but also managed to maintain comfortable working conditions, even during periods of high humidity.

The result was a substantial decrease in the previously staggering $140,000 revenue loss due to decreased productivity, injuries, and downtime. Employees could work comfortably in appropriate attire, which resolved the concerns raised by OSHA. The operational costs associated with the Cambridge ESC-Series were significantly lower than traditional mechanical cooling, relieving financial stress and ensuring a sustainable solution.

As Shane Arrigoni of HVAC Distributors says:

"The origin of this project is actually credited to the success of the Cambridge S-series. R&R needed an efficient solution to heat their space without recirculating the saw dust that is constant in the space. The contractor and I sold R&R two S1200’s back in the fall of 2021. After a single winter of use the owner approached us again and said, “I wish you could supply a cooling solution that works as great as the Cambridge heaters”.  This is when I suggested the New ESC units, and being the owner trusted us with the success of the S-1200’s, he gave us the opportunity. After the 1st Summer with the ESC’s he increased production in his facility so much he is now planning on a plant expansion, which of course will be heated and cooled with Cambridge!"

R&R Components's success story stands as a testament to the power of innovative solutions and a commitment to the well-being of employees. By embracing technology that leverages natural air cooling while ensuring a productive work environment, R&R not only mitigated their financial losses but also enhanced the overall work experience for their staff.

In partnership with HVAC Distributors and Cambridge's ESC Series, R&R Components redefined the expectations for cooling solutions in challenging environments. Their journey exemplifies how forward-thinking approaches and energy-efficient technologies can lead to remarkable success, providing cost-effective cooling and contributing to a more sustainable future. It showcases the potential of a well-engineered solution to address complex issues while enhancing both workplace comfort and financial stability.
