Ask anyone in sales what it’s like to do public speaking and the answer will likely be quite different from the paralyzing fear that some experience. We sometimes take it for granted.  But we all remember that first time we stood up in front of a crowd, trying to remember the lines we memorized, when the question from the back of the room derailed us … yep, there’s that paralyzing fear. Public speaking, a presentation given live before an audience, remains a common fear for most people. And being able to convey a message, share something personal or educate people plays a vital role in many institutions and in the art of developing solid relationships.   Creative Emceeing Makes the Morning Meeting Much More Fun! Part of the personal growth effort of Cambridge includes encouraging each employee to feel more confident speaking in front of a large group and other public speaking opportunities. The "practice" of this improvement comes in the form of taking turns to Emcee the morning meeting that we hold out in the shop every day. Each Emcee can speak to whatever they'd like as the group stretches - some take the chance to talk about their families or hometowns, others give trivia and yet, others - like Steve, our Controller - take the opportunity to be creative.   The Shaun P. McLaughlin Golf Classic Event: where fun meets philanthropy! What began as a casual golf outing has evolved into something truly special. The Shaun P. McLaughlin Golf Classic started as a way for colleagues to enjoy a day on the course, but it has since grown into an annual event that honors the memory of Shaun P. McLaughlin while raising funds for a worthy cause. At Cambridge, we believe in the power of giving, and this event serves as a testament to our commitment to making a positive impact.  Shaun, a previous Cambridge Vice President of Sales, was a beloved figure who sadly passed away from melanoma cancer over a decade ago. Around that same time, we decided to expand the golf classic and make it a charitable affair to pay tribute to him and his family. We chose the Siteman Cancer Center as our beneficiary, a local institution that provides cancer care to many in the St. Louis area.  The event has come a long way since its humble beginnings.   Scrum: The Art of How an Overtasked Engineering Department Turned Their Work from Frenzied to Feasible Though the practice of scrum is fairly new to Cambridge (has only been actively applied in three of our 56 year existence) it has already helped us formulate a new approach to goal setting and how we will ultimately achieve those goals. More importantly, we are using it to address safety practices and protocols within Cambridge, so that every one of our fellow employees makes it home at the end of the day. After being introduced to the scrum concept (grouping agile thinkers together that stress constant communication to achieve complicated tasks and goals) in J.J. Sutherland’s book Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time, a group of Cambridge engineers volunteered to be trained in the practice by Toyota scrum expert Nigel Thurlow and apply it within the Cambridge walls, thus becoming our first four certified Scrum Masters.
